University of Kansas Health System

Scalable, Sensitive, and Smarter Building Automation Across a Growing Healthcare
Network

Project Overview

Control Service Company (CSC) is playing a critical role in modernizing facilities across The University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS), delivering customized building automation and energy management solutions using Automated Logic’s WebCTRL® platform. As the health system grows—adding new buildings and acquiring others like Liberty Hospital—CSC is systematically upgrading infrastructure to give facilities teams deeper insight, greater flexibility,
and improved performance across all types of care environments.

Primary Goals

  • Improve energy efficiency and system control
  • Ensure zero or minimal disruption in 24/7, patient-occupied spaces
  • Provide intuitive tools for facilities teams to self-manage systems

Systems Controlled & Monitored

CSC’s customized Automated Logic solution enables control and monitoring of:

  • Rooftop Units (RTUs)
  • Air Handlers (AHUs)
  • Chiller and Boiler Plants
  • Variable Air Volume Systems (VAVs)
  • Pressurization control for Operating Rooms (ORs), Pharmacies, and Clean Rooms
  • Temperature & Humidity Monitoring and Reporting for Joint Commission documentation
  • Power Monitoring
  • Medical Gas Monitoring
  • Predictive Maintenance tools through tailored sensor applications and trend analysis

Key Challenges

  • Active Patient Spaces: Many buildings remain fully operational during installation, including mental health facilities and hospice care. Work is scheduled to minimize disruption and account for strict access and time restrictions.
  • Legacy Infrastructure: Each building has unique systems—some decades
old—requiring flexible strategies and tailored control logic.
  • System Complexity: Sensitive areas like MRI suites and proton therapy require integration with process chillers and pressurization safeguards.

Execution

CSC works closely with both TUKHS engineering and third-party contractors to plan and execute phased retrofits with minimal disruption. The WebCTRL® platform gives engineering teams full visibility and control, allowing real-time adjustments and better system performance.

Outcomes

  • Improved energy efficiency, cost savings, and reduced maintenance burdens
  • Increased visibility into system operation, allowing facilities staff to quickly identify and resolve issues
  • Better environmental control in sensitive areas like ORs, pharmacies, and behavioral health spaces
  • Significant performance improvements, including resolving a 5-year pressurization issue at Strawberry Hill shortly after implementation

Recognition

“After years of fighting negative building pressure, our team was finally able to stabilize the environment thanks to CSC’s system. Our team is now empowered to make changes on the fly without outside intervention.” – TUKHS Facilities Team

TUKHS recently received national recognition from the EPA for its retro-commissioning and energy-saving efforts. The honor reflects not just the system’s operational excellence, but the strength of its partnership with CSC—whose controls and collaboration directly supported this achievement.

Why CSC

  • Healthcare expertise: CSC understands the operational realities of critical environments
  • Flexible implementation: Able to adapt to any building type or control challenge
  • End-user empowerment: Provides tools and training that put control in the hands of engineering teams
  • Long-term partnership: Continual collaboration to ensure success across the full health system
