Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism as the lead architect for its upcoming expansion and transformation. The firm’s design integrates architecture, landscape, and community, maintaining the south lawn view into the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park. This dynamic and inviting concept will create more spaces for art and new opportunities for immersive experiences for all ages.
The Architect Selection Committee, impressed by WEISS/MANFREDI’s sensitivity to Kansas City and their engaging, creative approach, recommended the firm. The Board of Trustees ratified the choice, and detailed planning will now begin to meet the community’s long-term needs.
Director & CEO Julián Zugazagoitia praised the concept for respecting the museum’s original neoclassical building and Bloch building while offering a bold vision for the future. The design re-establishes a front door on the north side, opens the west side with an events and learning lobby, and makes the perimeters more welcoming.Public feedback was positive, reinforcing the committee’s impression. The museum looks forward to collaborating with WEISS/MANFREDI to refine the ideas and ensure alignment with its goals.
The Board is grateful to advisers including Richard Armstrong, Barry Bergdoll, Karen Christiansen, Arthur Cohen, András Szántó, and the museum’s Teen Council for their input throughout the process. Malcolm Reading, Competition Director, highlighted the global attention the competition drew, with 182 firms competing initially and a shortlist of respected architects. The expansion is anticipated to be privately funded, with design development closely monitored by museum and Board leadership. Community involvement will be actively sought, especially from students who participate in the museum’s programs and classes.A public celebration of the announcement will be held on Thursday, April 24, from 4-5 pm in Kirkwood Hall.
