A Winning Transformation for the home of the World Champions.
Control Service Company partnered with Turner Construction and the Kansas City Chiefs to deliver comprehensive building automation and environmental control solutions as part of the $375 million renovation of Arrowhead Stadium. The multi-phase revitalization spanned more than 1,000,000 square feet and included upgraded team facilities, expanded concourses, upgraded club levels, renovated suites, new fan amenities, and improved back-of-house operations—all completed without interrupting the football season.
As the Building Automation and Controls provider, CSC implemented advanced temperature, safety, and energy-management technologies to support the year-round operations of one of the NFL’s most iconic venues.
The Solution
CSC provided a fully integrated Automated Logic WebCTRL solution connecting HVAC, safety, and specialty systems throughout the stadium complex. The system supports conditioned, finished areas—including the Arrowhead Club Center, administrative offices, team areas, and the Chiefs Hall of Fame—along with the extensive tunnel system connecting Arrowhead to Kauffman Stadium.
Key integrations include:
Radiant Turf Temperature Control
CSC controls the hydronic radiant heat loop beneath the field, utilizing a hydronic boiler system to maintain ideal turf temperatures.
This system:
• Promotes grass growth during colder months
• Prevents frozen turf conditions
• Reduces concussion risk for players by maintaining optimal field softness and safety levels
CSC also manages turf temperatures for the adjacent practice field, giving the team year-round training reliability.
CO₂ + Temperature Monitoring in Beer Storage Areas
With more than 100 concession stands, kitchens, and beer storage rooms, CSC installed continuous temperature and CO₂ monitoring systems to enhance staff safety.
Features include:
• Local audible and visual alarms
• Global alarms within WebCTRL
• Protection from accidental CO₂ discharge during beer tap maintenance
• Temperature management to ensure product integrity
Water System Management During Events
To prevent plumbing overload during high-demand moments—especially halftime—CSC automated a stadium-wide urinal flushing schedule. The system:
• Staggers pressure load to prevent pipe backups
• Adjusts flush cycles based on event type and attendance
• Ensures system reliability during peak usage
Automated HVAC Scheduling + Energy Savings
Operationally, CSC automates seasonal and event-based heating and cooling schedules to:
• Reduce manual work for facilities staff
• Prevent energy waste during off-hours
• Protect equipment, refrigerated products, and interior spaces through automated setback modes
Project Challenges
Renovations were completed in multiple phases, requiring full coordination to avoid disruptions to the NFL season. CSC performed the majority of systems upgrades during the off-season, ensuring all systems were operational and tuned ahead of player return, preseason activities, and early fan events.
Technology & Integration
CSC’s implementation of Automated Logic WebCTRL provides stadium operations with:
• Unified, building-wide control across thousands of mechanical points
• Centralized alarming (local + global) for safety and equipment protection
• Remote access for staff and service partners
• Seamless system expansion for future enhancements
The system is scalable and designed to support the evolving needs of a modern sports and entertainment venue.
Impact
The integration of CSC’s automated control solutions enhances player safety, staff safety, operational efficiency, and game-day reliability across one of the NFL’s premier stadiums.
Through modernized turf heating, advanced CO₂ monitoring, energy-saving HVAC controls, and smarter plumbing management, Control Service Company plays a critical role in supporting the day-to-day operations and long-term performance of Arrowhead Stadium—the home of the World Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
