Effective Scheduling for Facility Management in Schools

For many businesses, modern mechanical systems and digital controls make managing even one facility a challenge. However, for Lee’s Summit School District, the goal was much larger—standardize systems across more than two dozen schools. This included implementing solutions in both new builds and retrofitted spaces.

Faced with this task, the district issued an RFP to find the most cost-effective and efficient path forward. Control Service Company submitted a proposal that stood out in both pricing and service. The school board selected CSC for the district’s first bond project, marking the beginning of a long-term partnership.

Initiation

To support both comfort and savings, CSC collaborated closely with the school district to secure a $2.5 million MDNR energy loan. Using Automated Logic, CSC equipped the facilities team with modern controls and feedback loops. This system enabled staff to schedule equipment effectively and reduce waste.

Previously, the team relied on reactive maintenance and struggled to gather useful data. Now, they can predict issues and respond before they affect students or faculty. Key improvements included monitoring carbon dioxide levels to maintain fresh air and adjusting fan speeds for more efficient air distribution.

Implementation

After completing the initial project successfully, the district expanded CSC’s involvement to over 30 facilities. This included a $3.2 million retrofit of 19 buildings, with eight completed in summer 2013 alone.

To maintain transparency, CSC provided detailed breakdowns of labor and materials for each contract. Thanks to the system’s intuitive design, school principals now access real-time building data. This empowers them to manage comfort levels and respond to staff needs more efficiently.

In addition to the projected $288,000 in annual energy savings, the district also benefits from $20,000 in operational savings and improved occupant comfort.

Finally, CSC developed a custom platform called NviroED for potential K–12 curriculum integration. This online dashboard helps students understand how their daily choices affect energy usage and overall district efficiency.
